Career Program at SHPA

Careers at SHPA

At South Hylton Primary Academy we aim to develop our pupils’ knowledge and interest in a wide range of careers by providing first hand experiences whilst responding to the needs of our pupils, labour market information and employers.  We endeavour to equip our pupils with the information and skills they will need in order to support their future choices.

We have a whole school approach to careers education and believe that exposure to careers information through first-hand experiences, conversations and guidance from an early age is the key to raising pupils aspirations and opening their minds to careers they may not have considered.

This is important to ensure our pupils realise their early education is a stepping stone to their chosen career paths. It is the responsibility of all staff to engage in conversations and highlight links to careers and employability skills throughout lessons and learning experiences.

Gatsby Benchmarks

Our careers programme has been structured around the  Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance which are:

  1. A stable careers programme

  2. Learning from career and labour market information

  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil

  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

  5. Encounters with employers and employees

  6. Experiences of workplaces

  7. Encounters with further and higher education

  8. Personal guidance

Careers

To ensure we address all of the benchmarks, Careers Education at South Hylton Primary is holistic, balanced and personalised. Our aim is to enthuse pupils and provide experiences and opportunities that will support them when making future choices.

Careers education is delivered in a variety of ways across year groups and is embedded into our activities calendar so that all pupils have numerous opportunities to experience high quality career information. For example, during ‘Engineering Week’, we invite a host of local engineering businesses to speak to the children; strong links to the local GP have seen all of our UKS2 children visit the surgery and become first aid trained and every year each year-group sets up their own Christmas ‘pop-up’ shop.
