Curriculum Overview

This section of our website explains what we teach, believe and aim for at South Hylton Primary Academy.

We aim for excellence in all that we do and believe strongly that all children should leave us ready for the next stage in their education.

We encourage children to grow into active, responsible and thoughtful members of the local and wider community and work tirelessly to ensure all learners can access an exciting, broad and balanced curriculum.

The curriculum is heavily influenced by our school mission statement: Respect, Support, Enjoy, Achieve. Our school values and celebrates each person by placing learning, enjoyment, achievement and wellbeing at the heart of our community.

“Pupils say that they love to learn and that adults have high expectations for them.”

Curriculum Drivers

Alongside our mission statement values, we have chosen four curriculum drivers to enhance and enrich children’s experiences.

Diversity. As a diverse school, we will embrace British Values and a range of cultures and beliefs, in order to enhance children’s appreciation and understanding of others.

Aspirations. As an aspiring school, we will aspire to nurture initiative and confidence to enable pupils to achieve and become well-rounded and effective members of the community.

Mindfulness. As a mindful school, we will be aware of and respect the needs of one and all, to ensure wellbeing is at the heart of our community.

Creativity. As a creative school, we will ensure children are provided with a wealth of opportunities to express and experience creativity through a range of media.

Implementation

Where possible, we incorporate subjects into topics. These topics are planned carefully by class teachers so that children’s skills in a range of subject areas are developed over time and reflect the issues which are occurring locally, nationally and internationally.

Within topics, children are encouraged to develop and embed essential skills in reading, writing and maths so that these are secure and can be applied within a range of contexts.

We are passionate about providing children with experiences that will last a lifetime and offer an extensive choice of after-school clubs which enrich our curriculum and inspire children to be the best that they can be at all times.

“Pupils say that they love to learn and that adults have high expectations for them. Adults help them to do well in this vibrant and caring school. They like the enrichment curriculum, with activities such as outdoor learning, safety training, and educational visits. Adults promote the school values, including respect, tolerance and resilience. Pupils take pride in upholding these values.”

“Leaders have created a climate where pupils want to learn. They have designed ambitious curriculum plans in all subjects, for all pupils. Leaders identify essential knowledge that they want pupils to know across every subject.”

Ofsted 2021

Our curriculum embraces the abilities of all children and lessons are meticulously planned and prepared to ensure every child reaches their full potential – not only academically but as well rounded, respectable and hardworking members of society.

Teachers incorporate and consider all learning styles when planning and aim to offer all types of learners the opportunity to achieve. We recognise that our school’s curriculum is the foundation for everything that we do and ensure that children, teachers and parents are excited about what we have to offer.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum will be assessed using procedures which allow us to measure outcomes against all schools nationally:

  • Percentage of EYFS pupils achieving a ‘Good Level of Development’
  • Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1
  • Percentage of children at the end of KS1 working towards or at the expected standard and at greater depth in reading, writing and maths
  • Multiplication tables check assessment at the end of Year 4
  • Percentage of children at the end of KS2 working towards or at the expected standard and at greater depth in reading, writing and maths

Additionally, assessments are made across all other areas of the curriculum to ensure we maintain high standards of teaching and learning. This enables our pupils to develop into confident, ambitious, well-rounded individuals with high aspirations for their future.
