Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL)

Here at South Hylton Primary we are working towards becoming an OPAL school. We
recognise the importance of high quality play to all children and as a result we are working towards
improving the provision available during play and lunchtime.
We have begun to include a range of additional play opportunities for children. This include (but is
not limited to) a quiet area with reading and drawing activities available, small world play, a mud
kitchen and a music area. Larger, more physical activities have been introduced through den
building and tyre play.
All children were involved in writing our OPAL play charter which is available to view here whilst
regular assemblies keep everyone up to date with what is happening..
We can’t wait to continue our journey!
NB: We are continually looking to develop our range of resources on offer. If you have any
unwanted pots, pans, wooden/plastic kitchen utensils or small play equipment that you would like
to donate it would be much appreciated.
We are also on the look out for tyres, crates and unwanted pieces of plastic pipe or guttering.
