Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education

Back

PSHCE is an important part of our curriculum and underpins the ethos of our school. We firmly believe in encouraging children to lead healthy lives through a range of daily activities and incorporate these principles into our curriculum.

Children learn about the importance of, for example:

  • daily exercise
  • healthy eating
  • being a responsible citizen within their own community
  • building and maintaining successful relationships with family and friends
  • their own and others’ mental health
  • The 5-steps to well-being

At South Hylton, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which pupils gain the knowledge and skills required to stay healthy, happy and safe, and thrive in their futures.

We recognise the importance of preparing our children for the world in which we live today and so PSHE is considered an essential area of the curriculum. Therefore, it is taught explicitly in lessons but is also developed through every element of day to day interactions and learning. Through a variety of teaching and learning strategies we aim to develop pupils’ confidence, resilience, and self-esteem, and their ability to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions. Our curriculum is taught through three key themes:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Relationships
  • Living in the wider world

We also supplement this curriculum with a whole range of other vital life skills including: British Values, digital literacy, forest school, first aid training, fire safety, road safety, water safety and many other exciting opportunities.

We are also a Rights Respecting school and teach the children the 5 Steps to well-being as endorsed by the NHS, as well as using mindfulness techniques as taught through the Breath. program.

We believe the impact of our curriculum is that our children are: kind and supportive of one another, independent and resilient learners, decision-makers and responsible citizens.

Children learn to value themselves as individuals. We encourage them to develop their own understanding of how to set and achieve personal targets and challenges, looking particularly at aspirations and careers that the children would like to pursue. Most of all, our children are prepared and excited for their futures!
