EYFS: Pupils begin to access Modern Foreign Languages

In the Early Years and Foundation Stage, children are exposed to Modern Foreign Languages through songs such as, 'Hello, Good Day, Children of the World’. Here they experience basic introductory elements of French, Spanish, Japanese, German, Italian, Hebrew and Russian as they learn to greet one another in each of these languages. During the Chinese New Year period, children will listen to and repeat basic greetings in Chinese. The curriculum adapts each year, depending on the intake of children and the cultures within, for example learning about the Nigerian culture, some basic language and traditions.

KS1: Pupils begin to access the Spanish language via the Language Angels scheme of work and resources.

In Key Stage One, Early Learning units will start at basic noun and article level and will teach pupils how to formulate short phrases. Children learn through nursery rhymes, songs, audio, imagery and narrative, becoming familiar with a specific set of characters that help them on their Spanish journey.

KS2: Pupils continue to access a high-quality Spanish curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources.

In Key Stage Two, children will progressively develop skills in Spanish through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons. These will be taught by class teachers, using the Language Angels programme to support and ensure accurate pronunciation and grammar. Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language. Teachers will choose lessons which offer appropriate levels of challenge and stretch to ensure pupils learn effectively, continuously building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the language they are learning.

Units, where possible and appropriate, will be linked to class topics and cross curricular themes. Children will build on previous knowledge gradually as their Spanish lessons continue to recycle, revise and consolidate previously learnt language whilst building on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammar is integrated and taught discreetly throughout all appropriate units. Knowledge and awareness of required and appropriate grammar concepts will be taught throughout all units at all levels of challenge.
