South Hylton Academy Recognised for Inclusive and Supportive Learning Environment
Back
South Hylton Academy has been one of the first schools in the country to undergo Ofsted’s updated ‘traffic light’ inspection framework, which places greater emphasis on safeguarding, inclusion, personal development, and the lived experience of pupils. The inspection reflects the school’s commitment to these areas, with the Academy rated green across all assessed areas.
Inspectors praised South Hylton Academy as an inclusive school where pupils feel welcome and safe, noting that bullying is “rare” and that pupils benefit from positive relationships and a calm, respectful learning environment. The report also highlights the Academy’s ambitious curriculum, strong early reading provision, welcoming early years offer, and the wide range of enrichment activities that pupils enjoy.
The inspection recognises the strong relationships between staff and pupils, and the school’s focus on pupils’ safety, wellbeing, and character development, as well as preparing children effectively for their next steps, both academically and personally.
Headteacher Chris Mitchinson said:
"We are pleased that Ofsted has recognised the inclusive, supportive environment our staff and pupils work hard to create every day. Like all schools, we have areas for continued focus, including handwriting and attendance, which remain priorities for us moving forward."
The outcome reflects the dedication of staff, pupils, and the wider South Hylton community, and underscores the school’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality education and experiences for every pupil.
